Indy

Important Update, August 2023: The Museum will close completely in November 2023 and will be closed until April 2025 due to a complete transformation of its building and permanent exhibition!

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the oldest and most revered motorsport facilities in the world. Constructed in 1909 five miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis, it was included on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum (IMSM) was established in 1956.

The Museum’s collection encompasses race cars from many series: IndyCar, NASCAR, Formula One, USAC Sprints and Midgets, motorcycle racing, and drag racing. It also includes a variety of passenger automobiles, many of which were manufactured in Indiana by companies that once had ties to racing. These include spectacular examples of Duesenberg, Marmon, and Stutz marques, as well as Ferrari, Mercedes, and a variety of other European passenger car makers. The collection encompasses motorcycles, dragsters, cars and other vehicles that have set world land speed records at various points in history.
