The Museum was started by former Governor Winthrop Rockefeller to house his collection of antique autos. When he died in 1973 the museum was closed. It was reopened a year later with mostly cars on loan from collectors from Arkansas and neighboring states. Since that time we have built a collection of over thirty cars

It has experienced tremendous growth, with its collection of racing vehicles and memorabilia, from 1902 to present, valued at more than $15 million, and increasing every year.
The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is dedicated to the presentation, interpretation, exhibition and history of motorcycles, vintage vehicles and motorsports. The collection now has over 1200 vintage and modern motorcycles as well as a substantial collection of Lotus and other racecars. The collection is the largest of its kind in the world. There are approximately 600 of the 1200 motorcycles on display at any given time. These bikes range from 1902 to current-year production. The common street bike is represented, as well as rare one-off Gran Prix race machinery
